The late Bishop Morris E. I have always had a high regard for Bro. Pugh's preaching and depth since the first time I heard him preach.  Then I met the man and all that regard increased. In fact, as a young man, I would often say that I could gauge a young minister's depth and maturity by what they thought, or said, about Bro. Pugh. Perhaps that was wrong of me, but I must admit that I still think this way.

He Took the Law In His Own Hands

I always enjoyed hearing Steve Richardson sing his own songs, and he was such a gifted songwriter.

In particular, I love this song...just wish my brother, Phillip Kuntzman, was with me so we could sing it together. :-)

I know this was recorded at the UPCI General Conference, but I don't know when it was recorded.

He Took the Law in His Own Hands

Verse 1:

Every time a nail was driven deeper in the wound, it signified the law was doomed.
Every time another drop of blood flowed down, it set us all on level ground.
God of Heaven had a reason that was you and I, and even in His dying He did more than die.

Chorus:

He took the law in His own hands.
He took the nails in His own blood and signed redemption’s plan.
And the covenant upon that tree promised grace to you and me.
I praise the Lord for Calvary where Jesus took the law in His own hands.

Verse 2:

Though they tried the innocent He offered His own life, the perfect lamb, the perfect sacrifice.
So the Word fulfilled the law and brought eternal life, He knew the cost and still paid the price.
He who knew no sin became the sin of everyone, and He set us free by shedding His own blood.

The Benefit and Purpose of Suffering

Sometimes suffering and adversity appear senseless to us, and we ask questions like, "How can anyone possibly benefit from this calamity?" Or, "Can someone tell me what purpose this is serving?" Or, simply, "Why, Lord?"

While there may be many answers to these questions, Daniel L. Segraves offers an answer from 1 Peter 5:10 in his book "If God Loves Me, Why Am I Hurting?"

 

"But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you" (1 Peter 5:10).

1. Perfect = "the idea of mending or repairing something that has been broken....It may be the will of God for believers to suffer temporarily, but the suffering will be followed by restoration and mending of whatever may have been broken during the suffering." 

2. Establish = "making something firm....a promise that God will firmly establish those who have suffered to any degree that they have experienced loss by their suffering." 

3. Strengthen = "making something strong, with specific application to the soul. God will remove any weakness that may have resulted from suffering." 

4. Settle = "laying a foundation or making something stable. Thus, if any believer's stability has been damaged by suffering, God will correct it."

The believer will suffer, but the blessing -- Yes, the blessing -- of suffering is God's promise to perfect, stablish, strengthen, and settle each believer before they reach God's eternal glory.
