J. T. Pugh - The Lord's Prayer

Matthew 4:4, "But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God."

J. T. Pugh - The Potter's Vessel

One of my favorite preachers was the late J.T. Pugh. Here he preaches a sermon entitled "The Potter's Vessel" (audio).

At the Potter's House - This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD: “Go down to the potter's house, and there I will give you my words. Then I went down to the potter's house, and, behold, he wrought a work on the wheels. And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it. Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying,O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the Lord. Behold, as the clay is in the potter's hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel." (Jeremiah 18:1-6) Sermon by Pugh (1923-2010).

At the age of 16 J.T. Pugh began to feel his call into the ministry. At the age of 17, he enrolled in "Southern Bible and Vocational College". This was a good school located in a rural community miles from Cisco, Texas. During three of the four years that he attended college, J.T. pastored a church in Gorman, Texas.

In the winter of 1943 he was ordained as a minister of "The Pentecostal Assemblies of Jesus Christ." He did not fill out an application for license. He did not meet the District Board. R.L. Blankenship, Superintendent of the PA of JC, Texas District just decided that he should be ordained during a district meeting. His first license was signed by W.T. Witherspoon and S.R. Hanby.

On August 20, 1944, J.T. married a beautiful, dedicated, young lady. Bessie Beryl Halbrooks has been the greatest event of his life, besides Jesus Christ. She was the first and only girl he ever dated. There were three children born to this union. After graduating from Bible School, the Pugh's travelled as evangelist sfor a short time. They did not own a car and knew that there was little likelihood that they would ever own one. They did not have the money to buy her bus ticket to their own revival after they were married. J.T. had to leave her at the bus station in tears. In 1945, they were called to pastor in Wichita Falls, Texas. From 1946 to 1948, they evangelized. During this time they purchased a car.

In 1949, at the age of 27, the Pugh's moved to Port Arthur, Texas to pastor "The First Pentecostal." They lived and ministered there for 17 years. In 1974 the Pugh's moved to Odessa, Texas to pastor "The First Pentecostal Church." For 19 years they enjoyed revival and growth. During that time Bro. Pugh served eight years as the Texas District Superintendent.

In the message he quotes Haskell Yadon, who wrote that there are some great dangers that in time might face a nation:

1. Wealth without work.
2. Education without humility.
3. Worship without truth and sacrifice.

I have always had a high regard for Bro. Pugh's preaching and depth since the first time I heard him preach.  Then I met the man and all that regard increased. In fact, as a young man, I would often say that I could gauge a young minister's depth and maturity by what they thought, or said, about Bro. Pugh. Perhaps that was wrong of me, but I must admit that I still think this way.

J. T. Pugh - The Kind of Church Jesus Gave to the World

On November 7, 1993, J. T. Pugh preached the last sermon of a great anniversary weekend to the saints of Zion Tabernacle (Kokomo, IN).  This was the weekend where the mortgage was burnt because --FINALLY-- the loan had been paid off.  It was a time of great joy and celebration.  Revival was in the air and God was showing Himself strong on our behalf.

The morning message was a masterpiece, which I have already uploaded here: The Removal of Humiliation.

Just prior to Bro. Pugh preaching, his wife, Bessie Pugh, made a few brief remarks, Pastor Nathaniel P. Urshan then introduced the preacher, and J. T. Pugh stepped up to the pulpit and preached: The Kind of Church Jesus Gave to the World.

On November 16, 1991, Rev. J. T. Pugh preached a great message to the congregation of Zion Tabernacle.  Pastor N. P. Urshan was pastoring the church at this time.

There are moments in a believer's life when a sermon is preached and received in such a way that the individual leaves changed, and not just moved. The event stays lodged in the mind as a watershed moment.  Such was the message delivered by the late Rev. J. T. Pugh to the congregation of Zion Tabernacle in Kokomo, IN, on Sunday morning, November 7, 1993.

For me, the moment holds infinite benefit.  I witnessed lives changed, healed, and restored as that man of God delivered the Word of God.  My own life-course was altered that morning as I sat in the pew listening to Bro. Pugh deliver his heart.

So, for your benefit, I am posting that message here in the hope that someone else will be as blessed as I was so long ago.
